A Little Paradise Called Kilodua

Kilo Dua is a name given by my family to our land which is located approximately two miles from our hometown, Balai Berkuak, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The area is a stretch of land covering about 2 hectares, with two unique characteristics.

The first one hectare, which is about 300 meters from the provincial road towards our village, is a former old fields. In this area has planted with rubber trees, several fruit trees, and some areas are prepared for vegetable gardens and fish ponds.

One hectare in both directions to the inside, a young jungle. Tens of years ago ever made ​​as a farming field by the first owner (before the land was bought by my dad). Now the small forest is still well maintained and we let it grow naturally. Many trees and plants of Borneo jungle typically growth there. Several large trees standing upright, small streams, and forest atmosphere that is almost exactly like a jungle.

Balai Berkuak is the capital of Simpang Hulu District, one of 14 districts in Ketapang, West Kalimantan. From the West Kalimantan provincial capital, Pontianak City, our village can be reached by land route along the provincial road about 200 kilometers. The road lately has been pretty good, so the trip can be completed in a relatively short time, ie 5-6 hours, using a motorcycle or car travel. Car travel rates Rp 150,000-Rp 200,000 or USD 15-USD 20 (Rp 10,000=USD 1).

Kilo Dua merupakan nama pemberian keluarga untuk lahan kami yang terletak sekitar dua kilometer dari kampung halaman kami, Balai Berkuak, Kabupaten Ketapang, Provinsi Kalimantan Barat. Areal ini berupa bentangan lahan seluas sekitar 2 hektare, dengan dua karakteristik unik.

Satu hektar pertama, yang berjarak sekitar 300 meter dari jalan provinsi menuju desa kami, merupakan bekas ladang tua. Di areal ini telah ditanami dengan pohon-pohon karet, beberapa pohon buah-buahan, dan sebagian areal dipersiapkan untuk kebun sayur-sayuran dan kolam ikan.

Satu hektar kedua arah ke bagian dalam, merupakan hutan rimba muda. Puluhan tahun lalu pernah dijadikan ladang oleh pemilik pertama (sebelum lahan itu dibeli oleh ayah saya). Kini hutan kecil itu masih tetap terawat dan kami biarkan tumbuh alami. Banyak pohon dan tetumbuhan khas rimba Kalimantan berkembang di sana. Beberapa pohon besar tegap berdiri, disertai aliran sungai kecil, serta suasana hutan yang hampir persis menyerupai rimba raya.

Balai Berkuak merupakan ibu kota Kecamatan Simpang Hulu, satu dari 14 kecamatan di Kabupaten Ketapang, Kalimantan Barat. Dari ibu kota Provinsi Kalimantan Barat, Kota Pontianak, desa kami bisa ditempuh dengan perjalanan darat menyusuri jalan provinsi sejauh sekitar 200 kilometer. Infrasturktur jalan akhir-akhir ini sudah cukup baik, sehingga perjalanan bisa ditempuh dalam waktu relatif singkat, yakni 5-6 jam, menggunakan sepeda motor atau mobil travel (tarif mobil travel Rp 150.000-Rp 200.000).
